Allegedly, whoever found the Passage- a way through the hazardous maze of Arctic islands and icebergs of Northern Canada- would claim exclusive trading routes to Asia although, what was ultimately more important was the prestige associated with being the first to find the Passage. When Victorian England had no more major wars to fight, after over a decade of skirmishing with Napoleon, the British government turned much of its focus and funds towards exploring the remaining untouched corners of the world- in particular, the much sought-after Northwest Passage. The fact that Terror was found in the depths of none other than Terror Bay, Nunavut, is another mysterious irony that aligns with the near-legendary reputation of the renowned maritime tragedy. So ended a nearly 200-year-old archaeological search to track down the remains of the vessels that disappeared with the men of the infamous Franklin Expedition. In 2016, two years after the discovery of HMS Erebus, her sister ship, HMS Terror was finally found.

Phuong knows he cannot marry her or take her away from Vietnam but he provides her some safety and security in an unstable nation. It has become an act of self-preservation to shut off this part of himself and to live a life where very little is required of him. Once he was filled with emotions, had passionate affairs, cared about things. The overall impression given of Fowler is of a man numbed by his own past. Fowler spends much of his personal time in an opium-induced stupor and cares very little for the events unfolding in Vietnam around him. He lives with a young Vietnamese woman, Phuong, who he cares about but is unable to marry because his Catholic wife in England refuses to divorce him. He’s a middle-aged man, with a history behind him. As a Brit, Fowler is somewhat more distanced from the politics involved and as a journalist he does his best to stay neutral.įowler has been in Vietnam for some years and has no plans or desire to return to England. This is Vietnam at the end of French colonialism, French rule breaking down and the beginnings of American involvement that would eventually lead to what we know as the Vietnam War. The Quiet American was first published in 1955 so this isn’t the Vietnam that many of us in the West might think of. The narrator of this novel is Fowler, a British journalist, stationed in Vietnam. This is not Graham Greene’s best work but even subpar writing from Graham Greene will have something worthwhile to it. The Quiet American – Graham Greene (The Viking Press, 1967) Grief sends the queen over the edge, and the twins are forced to take her place: they must compete in the Trials of Virtuous Succession until only one lives. This tenuous arrangement holds until assassins kill both the king and their elder brother. Carys, however, frequently faces punishment in order to hide her brother’s affliction, and she will do anything to protect him. Subsequently, Andreus is free to indulge himself, whether it be in women or the study of windmills. All his life, Carys has kept him safe, shielding him whenever he’s had an attack. And if the Council of Elders finds out, he and his sister face grave danger. White twins Carys and Andreus live in the Palace of Winds, safe from the war. After assassins kill the king and his heir, the remaining royal twins compete to earn the throne. The pacing of An Eye For An Eye is brisk to the point of being relentless. Review: A team of FBI agents is on the hunt for a sniper in An Eye For An Eye, the second romantic suspense thriller in the Heroes of Quantico series by Irene Hannon. Learn how to see when he is getting set up for a submission and avoid it. All Chuck needs to learn to do is avoid these holds. It would be easy to say that Chuck needs to work on his jiu-jitsu, but it is far too late in his career to start working on developing a great ground game. Chuck is the kind of fighter who wants the highlight reel knockout every fight he has. Chuck isn’t known for his jiu-jitsu, but with his wrestling ability he can stay out of these positions that will force a tap.Ĭhuck is going to be set in his way of punching, and even if he knew some jiu-jitsu, he wouldn’t use it. Chucks iron chin is gone, but his ability to throw hard punches isn’t.Ĭhuck needs to put his opponent in a position where they are on their back and cannot connect with powerful punches. He needs to take his next opponent down and use his wrestling ability to get the dominant position. In his next fight, Chuck needs to perform like a wrestler should. Instead of using his wrestling ability to take the match to the ground, he uses it to get off of the ground. Simply put, Chuck works exactly opposite of what wrestlers do. Instead of reading, I indulged in the audio book version of The Wind in the Willows, unabridged and narrated brilliantly by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, also director and screenplay writer for the movie Mr Toad's Wild Ride, as mentioned above. But, I could not write a review of Moore's version without rereading Grahame's text just to make sure she did a good job. Moore's interview in The Guardian from 2010 also soothed any fears I had that this great book could not survive an abridgement, no matter how idyllic the illustrations. However, it took Inga Moore's sumptuous illustrations for another childhood favorite of mine, The Secret Garden, and her charming picture book, A House in the Woods, along with a ringing endorsement from kid's book author, illustrator, and guru, Daniel Pinkwater for Moore's adaptation (yes, adaptation) of The Wind in the Willows on NPR to convince me to write this review. I think, above all else, I worried that people don't actually read The Wind in the Willows to their children anymore and this would be irrelevant. Yet, the idea of writing a review of this book is so overwhelming to me that I keep putting it off. As mentors and evaluators, our role is to help them understand the many forms that evidence can take, including child work samples, teaching artifacts, and anecdotes that illustrate child behaviors representative of their growth and development.
